In DevelopmentYour fast lane onto Sterling File Gateway
GatewayXpress turns trading partner onboarding on IBM Sterling File Gateway from a custom development effort into a configuration task -- new protocols, routing rules, and processing steps set up through a UI, live in under 15 minutes.
The typical time to configure and activate a new trading partner route in GatewayXpress, from protocol selection to monitoring -- not weeks of custom mapping and connector development.
Overview
Partner onboarding without the custom build
Every new trading partner on Sterling File Gateway traditionally means custom protocol setup, routing logic, and processing rules built and tested by hand. GatewayXpress replaces that with a configuration framework: pick the protocol, define routing by content or filename pattern, attach any pre/post processing the partner needs, and activate -- all through a user-friendly UI, all still visible in Sterling File Gateway's native monitoring.
Protocols & destinations
One framework, every delivery method your partners use
Certificate-based AS2 connectivity with MDN tracking for partners who require it.
Secure Shell File Transfer Protocol connectivity for partner and internal exchange.
Traditional FTP support for partners not yet migrated to a secure protocol.
Sterling File Gateway mailbox-based routing for partners exchanging through mailboxes.
Direct delivery to Azure File shares and Blob Storage containers.
Drop-off and pickup directly from SharePoint document libraries.
Stream files and events into Kafka topics for real-time downstream consumption.
Delivery to and from Google Cloud Storage buckets.
Delivery to and from Amazon S3 buckets, including partner-owned buckets.
Smart routing
Route on what a file is, not just where it came from
Content-Based Routing
Route files to the right destination by inspecting the content itself -- not just the connection they arrived on -- so one inbound endpoint can serve many downstream targets.
Filename-Based Routing (RegEx)
Match and route on filename patterns using regular expressions, so naming conventions your partners already use become the routing logic instead of a manual lookup table.
Pre/post processing
Handle the transformation work automatically
Attach pre-process and post-process steps to any route -- format or encoding conversion, compression and decompression, and validation checks -- so files arrive in the shape the destination system expects, without a partner-specific script to maintain.
Configuration & monitoring
Every route is built through a user-friendly configuration UI -- no scripting required to stand up a new partner. Once active, file activity is visible directly in Sterling File Gateway's own monitoring UI, so your operations team keeps the dashboard and login they already use.
How onboarding works
From new partner to live route, in four steps
Select protocol & endpoint
Pick from AS2, SFTP, FTP, Mailbox, Azure, SharePoint, Kafka, GCS, or S3 -- no custom connector code to write.
Define routing rules
Set content-based and filename/RegEx routing rules through the configuration UI.
Configure pre/post processing
Attach the processing steps a partner needs on the way in or out.
Activate & monitor
Turn the route on and watch it in Sterling File Gateway's own monitoring UI -- no separate dashboard.

GatewayXpress -- frequently asked questions
Does GatewayXpress replace IBM Sterling File Gateway?
No. GatewayXpress is a configuration framework and accelerator that runs on top of your existing Sterling File Gateway environment -- it doesn't replace it, and everything it configures is visible and monitorable in Sterling File Gateway's own UI.
Which protocols and destinations does GatewayXpress support?
AS2, SFTP, FTP, Mailbox, Azure File and Blob Storage, SharePoint, Kafka, Google Cloud Storage, and Amazon S3 -- covering both traditional EDI delivery protocols and modern cloud storage and streaming targets.
How is under-15-minute onboarding possible?
Because protocol, routing, and processing setup happen through a configuration UI built for repeatable patterns, rather than custom development per partner -- most new partner onboards are a matter of selecting options and activating the route.
Can we still monitor everything from the standard Sterling File Gateway console?
Yes -- GatewayXpress doesn't introduce a separate monitoring tool. Routes and file activity configured through GatewayXpress show up natively in Sterling File Gateway's own UI, so your operations team doesn't need a new login or dashboard.
What kind of pre- and post-processing can be applied?
Processing steps run automatically as files move through the gateway -- for example format or encoding conversion, compression/decompression, and validation checks -- configured per route rather than hand-coded per partner.
Is GatewayXpress an IBM product?
No. GatewayXpress is Sonnet IT Solutions' own configuration framework, built to run on top of IBM Sterling File Gateway. It is not an IBM product, and its listing here does not imply IBM endorsement or partnership -- see the trademark note below.
